The Residence
Paola was designed and built as a bed and breakfast
by Les and Kelly Hostetler. Les, a commercial and
custom residence builder for 25 years, was the primary
architect advised by specialty engineers. Efficiency
and privacy were Les and Kelly main concerns and the
result was super insulated interior walls and nearly
sound proof sleeping rooms. Paola consists of 6,226
square feet of living space plus entry rooms and decks.
The foundation is 8 inch poured concrete walls and
a 6 inch thick slab in the basement. The logs are
20 inch diameter Western Larch. R-49 or R-38 roof
insulation under metal roof. Marvin Thermopane low-E
argon windows. Larson exterior screen doors. One 80
thousand and one 100 thousand BTU natural gas furnaces,
three 50 gallon quick recoveries, direct vent natural
gas hot water heaters, three pressure tanks and a
water purifying system. The professionally engineered
septic system consists of a 2500 two chambered tank
and leach field.
Main Floor
Primary entry has a slate floor, Englander woodstove
encased in river rock and 4 foot by 7 foot windows
with views of the gardens and Mt. St. Nicholas. An
arched log passes through leads into the Great Room
that has 22 foot ceilings and a soaring masonry and
real river rock fireplace. The floors are native larch
and the walls hand peeled Western Larch log and are
accented by tongue and groove vertical blue pine.
There are two main floor guest rooms with private
baths and windows with views into the gardens and
Grant Ridge. The stairs leading up to a second floor
balcony and two additional guest rooms with private
baths have Lodge pole log railings.
The breakfast bar seats four and leads to the kitchen.
French doors lead into the dinning room that comfortably
seats 12 and boasts views of Mt. St. Nicholas and
Glacier National Park.
A true chef's kitchen features ceramic tile
flooring, Starmark Maple Cabinets with glass doors,
base cabinets with roll out drawers, hanging wine
rack, European style plate rack, Stainless Steel 48
inch Viking range with double oven, four burners,
griddle and char broiler, stainless steel lighted
range hood with two 1200 cfm exhaust fans and spice
self. There is also a Stainless steel Viking dish
washer that heats to 165 degrees to meet Health Department
standards. Two Sub-Zero refrigerators (500 and 550
series) also have Starmark maple door panels. The
kitchen also has a chef's pantry cabinet, walk
in pantry; maple butchers Block Island with porcelain
hand sink and overhead direct lighting for the workspace.
Also on the main floor the laundry facilities include
a Maytag washing machine and Maytag gas dryer, maple
cabinets with utility sink, stainless janitors sink,
a folding counter and toilet.
A hallway leads from the kitchen to the guest suite
rooms, an entry and the greenhouse. The guest room
suite has a private entry, king bed, jetted whirlpool
tub, double headed shower in custom tile. The southern
length of the home is a greenhouse with utility sink,
potting area and shelving for plants year around.
The greenhouse exits to a private covered deck.
Second Floor
The second floor includes a bedroom
with a reading loft and full bath equipped with a
claw foot tub and shower and the Master Suite. The
Master Suite has a sitting room with a couch and chair
and a window with views of the grounds, double Mountain
and Mt. St. Nicholas. The Master bedroom has vaulted
ceilings, cozy sitting area, Wilsonart laminate flooring,
maple cabinet wake-up center with an under counter
fridge, sink, wine rack, roll out drawers and glass
doors, Vermont Castings Gas Fireplace, custom crafted
wrought iron ladder that goes to a 300 square foot
loft. The Master bath has a 6 foot jetted Jacuzzi
whirlpool tub, separate double headed shower, under
counter Creda washer and dryer, Fritz flooring and
ceramic tile and lots of counter space.
Outside there is a 12 x 28 garden shed with greenhouse,
a 16 x 20 wood/storage shed, a 8 x 10 playhouse, 8
x 10 dog kennel and large fenced area. Paola's
grounds are landscaped with stone walkways leading
through extensive perennial beds, fenced herb garden,
about 70 roses and lawn.
